Compliance and Assurance

Principal Engineering Ltd provides independent engineering services to organisations operating radar and surveillance systems within safety-critical environments.

All engineering activities are undertaken with a clear emphasis on competence, safety, regulatory awareness, and professional accountability. Services are delivered within defined scopes of work and do not constitute regulatory approval, certification, or operational sign-off unless expressly agreed in writing.

Regulatory & Engineering Alignment

Engineering support is delivered with due regard to recognised UK aviation and safety frameworks relevant to surveillance radar and air traffic management systems, including:

  • CAP 670 (ATS Engineering) principles
  • Applicable air traffic management and airport safeguarding requirements
  • Relevant health and safety legislation and guidance

Engineering advice, analysis, and reporting are provided to support informed decision-making by the responsible authority or organisation.

Independent Engineering Role

Principal Engineering Ltd operates as an independent engineering service provider.

This means:

  • Engineering assessments and analyses are technically objective
  • Advice is based on evidence, modelling, and operational experience
  • Responsibility for regulatory decisions, operational approval, or implementation remains with the customer or relevant authority

Clear definition of scope, assumptions, and limitations forms part of all engineering activities.

Health & Safety Management

Health and safety considerations are integral to all engineering activities.

This includes:

  • Risk assessment and methodical planning of work activities
  • Development and use of safe systems of work
  • Compliance with applicable health and safety legislation and guidance
  • Use of appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE)

Where engineering activities are conducted on operational sites, work is undertaken in accordance with local procedures, permits, and safety management systems.

Working at Height

Engineering activities involving access to radar towers, antenna platforms, or elevated structures are undertaken by personnel trained and competent in working at height.

This includes:

  • Use of fixed ladder access systems
  • Ascending Radar Antennae
  • Compliance with working at height regulations
  • Use and inspection of appropriate fall-protection equipment
  • Understanding of rescue from height requirements

All working at height activities are planned, risk-assessed, and conducted in accordance with applicable regulations and site requirements.

Return-to-Service Boundaries

Principal Engineering Ltd recognises the importance of clearly defined maintenance and return-to-service responsibilities.

Engineering support may include:

  • Maintenance activities
  • Fault investigation and rectification support
  • Engineering advice relating to system condition or performance

Final return-to-service decisions, certification, or operational acceptance remain the responsibility of the system owner, operator, or designated authority.

Safeguarding & Engineering Analysis

Safeguarding and engineering impact analyses are conducted to assess potential effects on radar and surveillance system performance arising from external developments or environmental changes.

This work is:

  • Engineering-led and evidence-based
  • Conducted within defined scope and assumptions
  • Documented in clear, structured engineering reports

Such analyses are intended to support planning, regulatory, and stakeholder decision-making and do not constitute approval or consent.

Technical Competence & Experience

Engineering services are delivered by an experienced radar engineer with over 30 years’ industry experience across civil aviation, defence, and safety-critical infrastructure environments.

This experience underpins:

  • Practical understanding of operational radar systems
  • Real-world maintenance and fault-finding knowledge
  • Engineering judgement informed by system behaviour and limitations

Professional Accountability

Principal Engineering Ltd is committed to professional, auditable engineering delivery.

This includes:

  • Clear definition of scope and responsibilities
  • Documented engineering rationale
  • Transparent communication with customers and stakeholders

Engineering services are provided with integrity, independence, and a focus on safety and system performance.

Policies & Governance

Principal Engineering Ltd maintains a suite of internal policies and procedures supporting the safe, compliant, and professional delivery of engineering services.

These include policies covering health and safety, working at height, risk assessment, competence, and ethical business conduct.

Policies are maintained under version control and reviewed periodically to ensure continued relevance and alignment with applicable legislation, guidance, and industry best practice.

Policy documentation is available to customers, insurers, and other stakeholders on request, where appropriate. Please Contact us for further information.
